The bande dessinée
France and Belgium share a great comic-strip culture, the bande dessinée, and its heroes have been animated since the 1940s.
The big names
Asterix the Gaul, Daisy Town, The Smurfs and the Magic Flute and The Adventures of Tintin are the classic adaptations. Marsupilami, Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea and Blake and Mortimer carried the tradition onto television.
