A short history of French animation

From Émile Cohl to Annecy.

The first cartoons

Émile Cohl drew Fantasmagorie in Paris in 1908, often called the first drawn cartoon. In the 1930s, Władysław Starewicz made puppet films such as The Tale of the Fox near Paris.

After the war

Paul Grimault and Jacques Prévert began The Curious Adventures of Mr. Wonderbird, which Grimault later remade as The King and the Mockingbird in 1980. René Laloux brought science fiction with Time Masters.

The new wave

Kirikou and the Men and Women, Zombillénium and Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds show the range of French studios today, many of them trained at the Gobelins school and shown at the Annecy festival.
